The journey

Sail up, engine off, and the whole day ahead

You board in the afternoon and from then on the boat is yours. The captain suggests a route over the first glass of tea, shaped by the wind and the season, and you change it whenever you like. Most days hold two or three anchorages, a swim before breakfast, a shore walk to a ruin or a village, and a long lunch under the awning while the cook works from whatever the morning’s market had. Evenings are quiet: the anchor goes down, the generator goes off, and the coast turns the colour of the gulet’s own teak.

What travellers usually ask

How far ahead should we plan?

Three to six months is comfortable for the high season, and the gulets in particular go early. That said, we have put together good journeys on three weeks notice more than once.

Can we change the route once we have started?

Yes, and people often do. A private charter is yours; if a cove turns out to be worth another night, the captain will simply reshape the next day.
