Wildflowers of Turkey: where and when to look

By Yasemin Konuralp ·

Turkey holds around ten thousand plant species, a third of them found nowhere else. The difficulty is not finding flowers. It is timing.

The bloom moves north and uphill through the spring, which means a single week can be perfect in one valley and three weeks early in the next. Planning a botanical journey is mostly planning altitude.

March to April

The coastal strip and the lower Lycian valleys. Orchids, anemones, cyclamen.

May to June

The Taurus range and the high plateaux, where the fritillaries and the endemic bulbs are.
